A total of five river water sharing disputes between 11 states are pending under the Inter-state River Water Disputes Act of 1956.
In one dispute, Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan are involved in a tussle over sharing of water of Ravi and Beas rivers.
The case was referred to the Tribunal in April, 1986.
For sharing of Cauvery water, Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry are at loggerheads.
In July, 1986, the matter was referred to the Centre and in June, 1990, it was finally referred to the Tribunal.
Sharing of Krishna river water sharing is another bone of contention among Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra.
The matter was referred to the Tribunal in April, 2004.
Goa, Karnataka and Maharashtra are in a dispute for sharing of Madei river waters and the matter was referred to the Central government in July, 2002, Minister of state for Water Resources Jai Prakash Narayan informed the Lok Sabha today in a written reply.
He said Andhra Pradesh and Orissa had a similar tiff over sharing of waters of Vansadhara river and the matter came up before the Centre in February, 2006.
